Our Story:
From Idea to Ocean
Dr. Stefan Siegal was doing fluid dynamics research at the U.S. Air Force Academy, when a magazine article on wave energy sparked an idea: His work on feedback flow control could solve wave energy’s biggest obstacle, scale. Nights of napkin math turned into working models, until one day in 2010, Stefan walked into his boss’ office and said, “I need funding for this idea, or I’m leaving.” He got his funding, and Atargis Energy was born.
The early years focused on proving the physics. The U.S. Department of Energy funded tests at Texas A&M in 2011-2012 that validated real power output and informed large-scale simulations. Over the next decade, the team refined the design, perfected the control algorithm, and secured key patents. In 2019, new DOE support fueled the next phase. By 2024, a $6.1 million testing campaign underway in Canada was proving what simulations had predicted years earlier.
The next chapter is scale. With proven performance and global potential, Atargis is preparing pilot projects through Atargis EU, Atargis UK, and Atargis Canada to bring wave energy to the grid.
